US Woman Killed in Shark Attack in the Bahamas

Subheading

A 58-year-old woman from Massachusetts was killed by a shark while paddleboarding in the Bahamas on Monday, according to local authorities.

The woman, who has not been identified, was reportedly attacked while paddleboarding near Green Cay, a small island in the Abaco Islands. Witnesses said she was bitten multiple times and died at the scene. Police have identified the victim as Caroline DiPlacido, a 58-year-old resident of New Jersey, who was on vacation in the Bahamas with her family. DiPlacido was paddleboarding with friends when she was attacked by the shark, which is believed to have been a tiger shark. Witnesses said the shark was about 10 feet long and bit DiPlacido several times, causing serious injuries. DiPlacido's body was recovered by the Royal Bahamas Defense Force and taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The US Embassy in Nassau has confirmed DiPlacido's death and is providing assistance to her family. The Bahamas is a popular tourist destination, and shark attacks are relatively rare. However, there have been several shark attacks in the Bahamas in recent years, including a fatal attack in 2019. Experts say that shark attacks are often caused by people getting too close to sharks or by sharks mistaking people for their prey. To avoid shark attacks, experts recommend swimming or paddling in groups, avoiding areas where sharks are known to congregate, and not swimming or paddling at dawn or dusk, when sharks are most active.
