In the October issue of the magazine, "Our cultural institutions are facing a," a letter will be published in the Letters section. This letter, also known as the Harpers Letter, is an open letter defending free speech that was published on the Harper's Magazine website on July 7, 2020, with 153 signatories.
In response, a letter titled "A More Specific Letter on Justice and Open Debate" was published, criticizing the Harpers statement for its "lofty generalities" and its failure to address the broader issues of systemic racism and inequality.
